In our first event of 2020 we host the artist Millie Schwier for a workshop to kick off the gardening season. For Schwier, the garden is a place highly dependent on diversity. To work in the garden is to be aware of time in another way than is demanded by our contemporary society - not aiming for a singular moment of success, but rather nurturing the cyclical while testing and learning how to live together as a varied collection of species.

In the workshop we will be sowing seeds for the coming summer, but also considering the development of the garden as an annually returning project and the potential involvement one can have with it.

Millie Schwier is a sculptor living and working in Berlin. Her work is conceptually and materially linked to nature and its cycles. Referencing architecture and its monumentality, she uses natural materials to mimic manmade forms, setting up compositions that are susceptible to decay or the overrun of nature.
She studied sculpture at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland and drawing at Camberwell, UAL, London. In 2017 she was commissioned to build the pavilion for INtransit and the annual festival in Notting Hill London. In collaboration with the architect Nozomi Nakabayashi, she showed works as part of the Communal Knowledge Summer Show at the Showroom Gallery, London. In 2013, she (with Tom Clowney) built Make Work Space in London, a joint workshop and live-work space.

Auftakt zur Gartensaison 2020

In unserer ersten Veranstaltung für 2020 werden wir gemeinsam mit der Künstlerin Millie Schwier einen Workshop zum Auftakt der Gartenzeit ausrichten.
Für Schwier ist der Garten ein Ort, der essentiell abhängig von Artenvielfalt ist. Im Garten zu arbeiten bedeutet, sich der Zeit auf eine andere Art und Weise bewusst zu werden, als unsere heutige Gesellschaft es verlangt – nicht, um einen einzigen Moment des Erfolgs anzustreben, sondern um das Zyklische zu fördern und zu lernen als verschiedene Arten miteinander zusammen leben.

In dem Workshop werden wir Samen für den kommenden Sommer säen, sowie die Entwicklung des Gartens als ein jährlich wiederkehrendes Projekt planen und mögliche Formen der Partizipation besprechen.

Millie Schwier ist Bildhauerin und lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Ihre Arbeit ist konzeptionell und materiell mit der Natur und ihren Zyklen verbunden. In Anlehnung an die Architektur und ihre Monumentalität verwendet sie natürliche Materialien, um künstliche Formen nachzuahmen und Kompositionen zu schaffen, die dem Verfall oder der Rückeroberung der Natur ausgesetzt sind.

Sie studierte Bildhauerei am Edinburgh College of Art in Schottland und Zeichnung in Camberwell, UAL, London. 2017 wurde sie beauftragt, den Pavillon für INtransit und das jährliche Festival in Notting Hill London zu bauen.
